Linux
It is an
operative system such as
Mac OS,
DOS or Windows,
which allows you to use programs like: text
editors, games,
internet navigators, etc.
Linux can be used through a graphic
interface, just like Windows or Mac OS, but
it can also be used through command lines
such as DOS; however, its main
characteristic is that it is a free
distribution operative system; meaning that
it has a |
|
|
free code,which has been
developed initially by Linus Torvalds, and
we say initially because once you obtain the
operative system, you also obtain the
freedom to study, distribute or change it,
and also the opportunity to contribute to
its development, using basic rules, due to
the fact that programmers from all over the
world always contribute by decreasing the
restrictions made by the GLP (General Public
License). That is what makes it really free.
It is based in the Unix operative system,
specifically in MINX, a little Unix system
developed by andy Tanenbaum with academic
purposes.
The system is formed by a system nucleus
(kernel) and a great amount of programs
(libraries that make its utilization
possible). |
|
Many of these programs and
libraries are possible because of the
project GNU, this is why, many identify
Linux as GNU / Linux, in order to highlight
that the system is formed by both, the Linux
nucleus (kernel) and also the software
produced by the GNU project. |
|
 |
Currently, Linux has all the
characteristics that can be found in any
Unix modern system, including lineal
directions of up to 32 bits, virtual memory,
real multitask, shared libraries, chargeable
on demand kernel units, TCP / IP support
(including SLIP, PPP, NFS, etc.) and X
Windows system (including X servers for the
most popular video adapters, and Motif
clones, OpenLook, NextStep and Windows 95
like Windows managers). |
It can be used in
laptops, servers
and work stations. It was developed for i386 processors, and
now, it supports i486, Pentium, Pentium Pro and Pentium II
processors, and also aMD and Cyrix clones. It also supports
machines based in SPaRC, DEC alpha, PowerPC / PowerMac and Mac /
amiga Motorola 680x0. |

- Corel Linux
- Esware
- Fedora

- Gentoo
Characteristics of Linux:
It has sheels which are similar to MS DOS, but unlike Windows,
these commands can also modify the operative systems source
codes and also the one on its applications; there are several
types of sheels, and each of them are unique and perform one
specific task, by modifying them, we are able of creating
infinite ways of operation.
The multitask function, meaning the capacity of performing tasks
simultaneously is done in Windows, but what Linux does or uses
is the Unix system, which performs actions in an interspersed
way, due to the fact that it uses backgrounds and foregrounds,
this system determines the priority that each application has
while we are using another one.
The Linux security has an
anti hacker, anti
spyware, and an anti malware
security systems, and also a firewall which is very much
like the one Windows has, which protects the system from any
external hazards such as TCP / IP connections and other ports.
To be able of downloading Linux latest version, you must visit
it official website: http://www.linux.org/, which has tutorials
and a forum in which you can be advised during the whole process
of installation, and you will also be able of creating your own
applications with this operative system.
